The trip was almost the whole adventure in itself. A busy itinerary saw the bustle of the departure flight, shuttles to the rental car and the hotel, and the late dinner in a strange town. That was just Day One. After an early wake-up, and a mandatory study hall, we were off to the course for the exposure to the big meet atmosphere and a new course. By this time the integration of the Northgate and Castro Valley athletes into a single CV Track Club was complete.
The festivities continued with the college visit, the relaxing at the mall, and the cozy dinner at a very nice Italian restaurant. Race day came early, and after breakfast we were off to the races. After a bit of a computer snafu, we ran well in a fast race and then hung around to watch the best of the nation tussle in a pair of very exciting races.
There was even a family/friend angel to the evetn. Coach Brewer’ son was along as a driver, Nicole’s mom accompanyied us a a lady chaperone, Ami’s grandparetns and aunt and uncle stopped by to see the races, and CVHS running alum Carolyn Gilchriese bussed up from Eugene to pal with Aurora.
And to top it off, a sedate flight back was made notable by a chance visit from the UC Berkeley track coaches who were very solicitous of our team.
The races were slightly complicated by the fact that half the team was not on the entry list, and we had to get them in on late status. Then the meet administration couldn’t get them into the official results, and that affected the scoring. Coach Brewer has rescored the meet to include all of the CV Track Club athletes.
As for the race itself: the weather conditions were a cozy 34 degrees at race time. Even though cold, it was not raining or snowing, so the conditions were deemed the best yet for this race. Danny took advantage to go out hard, hang on, and grab himself a medal at this season-culminating race. Carter showed a lot of spark for a freshman. Cole and Mike were a tandem a bit after that. Ben was still trying to be consistent after missing most of the season through injury.
Nicole showed her aggressive running style which held up for her to be the 13th girl in the race (which was a boy-girl combined race). Amy was only 10 seconds behind her. Caitlyn had a sore toe swell up during the race, and held on to finish, with Aurora striding in just behind her.
Race analysis shows some very good results. Danny would have been on 21 of the 22 teams in the championship race on the basis of time.
Nicole would have been on 14 of the 22 girls’ teams in the championship race. Ami would have been on 10 of those teams. And Caitlyn and Aurora, both with subdued efforts, still managed to run fast enough to have been able to be on 2 of those teams. Once again our runners have proved that they can run with the best from across the country.

Danny Stalters At State !!!
Danny Stalters carried the Northgate season to the very end with his second straight appearance at the State Meet.. This is the third straight year that the Broncos have been represented at the highest level of California competition, and we look to extend that streak as far as we can.
Dan had to endure a false start, and the second attempt found him squeezed further back than he wanted. Still, he worked his way up and hit at or near his target marks at the one and two mile marks. With a strong surge near the end, he ended up 35th out of 208 runners in Division III. His time of 16:05 is a 29 second improvement over last year’s race here.
Danny ends his 2011 campaign with a slew of school records, including Bronco all-time bests on the Castle Rock course, the Mt. SAC course, and the Hayward High course. And of course, he was the Northgate’s first individual league champion since Rolf Kvalvik in 1995.
Northgate bests on the Woodward Oark course (California state meet site):
1 Will Melton 15:57 2009
2 Danny Stalters 16:05 2011
3 Mike Wickman 16:33 2004
4 Danny Stalters 16:34 2010
5 Blake Anderson 16:46 1989
6 Rolf Kvalvik 16:47 1994
7 Rolf Kvalvik 16:53 1995
8 Chris Macluso 16:57 1989
9 Jake Cunningham 17:03 2004
10 Matt Coviello 17:04 1989
11 Vince Durant 17:04 2004
Danny does not end his season here, as he and a few other Bronco runners will team up with some athletes from our “buddy” team, Castro Valley, and run in Portland next weekend in the Nike Team Nationals.
A little team comparisons: Danny would have been no less than 3rd on all of the scoring teams in the race. That means he would have made the top 5 of all the top teams in Division III in California. Compared to Division I (the fastest race of the day) Danny would still have made the top 7 of all the teams there. That means that he would have been a member of the very fastest teams in the entire state. Not a bad way to end the official cross country season.
Caitlyn scoots in with a school record on this course.
2nd year in a row
Danny Off To State ! !
Danny Stalters led the Bronco charge today with a top 10 finish and qualified as an individual to the State Championships for the second year running. The boys’ varsity place 11th in Division III.
Danny has been one of the top Division III runners all year, and this race established those credentials emphatically. Even though he was 9th in his division, his time of 15:30 was 14th fastest overall of all the divisions out of a total of 676 runners. He also continued to etch his name in the Northgate record books and is now the top Bronco runner on this course as well, taking down Michael Wickman’s standard of 15:42 set in 2004.
The boys’ team ran a team time of 83:54, which was off the coaching expectations a bit. Stil, it is the fourth fastest Bronco team time ever on this course. We also were the 29th fastest team of the 97 boys teams that competedc today.
Joel turned out to be our # 2 boy today with a very consistent effort. His senior season has been characterized by his reliable performances. James made a surge early in the race but was unable to hold it through the last half mile. Still, he had a sizeable PR from last year. Jake gave us a glimpse of the future with a very nice freshman time. He ran 5 seconds faster than Danny did his freshman year here. Ben made the most of his varsity opportunity by moving up to be our 5th man with a very determined effort. Mike continued his season-long trend of up-and-down races, and this was not his best effort. Cole caught a a cramp mid-way through the race and it slowed him to a crawl the last half.

Caitlyn Sets School Record
Caitlyn Mundrane led the Bronco effort today with a school record on the Hayward course. The Northgate team finished 10th in the Division III race. For her efforts, Caitlyn still came up one sport short from qualifying to the State Meet.
The Bronco girls ran a team time of 102:34, which is a sizeable improvement over last year and the fastest Northgate team time on this course since 2004. The team finished 10th on a field of 16 teams.
Leading up to the race, Caitlyn and Ami both knew that they had a chance at a State Meet spot if theywere able to run in the top 15 of the race. However, they also knew that the Division III race was the fastest race of the day, given the caliber of the teams involved.
Ami and Caitlyn both went out well, but found themselves positioned in the 20’s as the race went along. Both of them made good pushes to get closer to the margin necessary. Ami fell off the pace a bit entering the 3rd mile, while Cailtyn continued to nibble at the front pack. Eventually she was involved in a great finish sprint in the last 100 meters and came up 2 seconds short. Ami raced in a bit back.
Meanwhile, Meredith was involved in her own race in the top 3rd of the race and holding her own well. The pace was substantially quicker than any other race she’s been in, and she held on to finish in a quick time for a freshman. Kelsey showed off her new level of confidence as she attached the course well. Alex had a muted effort today. Rachel and Kayla, both promoted from JV’s for this race, were right behind Alex at the end.
We had lots of movement on the Northgate record list for this course. The team time was the fastest in nearly a decade. Caitlyn, Ami, and Kayla all had PR’s. Caitlyn, Ami, and Meredith all made the top-10 list for our record book. And we only had one senior on the team today.

2. The team time was 29th out of 97 teams.
3. Ian Frazier went down with a stress fracture in his foot in early October. We essentially lost our # 3 man at that time. Jake and Cole were brought up from the Frosh-Soph late in the season and had to encounter a steep learning curve. We had a lot movement in our varsity picture this season, and still were able to maintain an above-average program. Good work, boys.
4. Jake was the 14th fastest freshmann the race.

Notes:
1. Caitlyn was truly the “heart-break” kid today. She was the 5th individual in the race, but she did not finish in the top 16 runners which is the cut-off mark for Division III.
2. Caitlyn was the 43rd fastes runner out of 556 finishers today.
3. Our team time placed us 35th out of 78 teams competing today.
4. The Northgate ladies are returning all but one of today’s runners, and the future looks bright.
Looking Ahead:
1. Danny will be running in Fresno this coming Saturday. His race starts at 1:30 in Woodward Park. He hopes to improve on his time from last year, and move up on that Northgate list as well.
2. Several of our runners have elected to run in the Nike Nationals in Portland December 3. This is the third year we have taken a club team to this race to experience the top level of our sport. Stay tuned for results.
3. Winter running is here. To stay in shape, runners need to continue running 4-5 days a week. “Time off” from the cross country season does not mean time off from running, but rather time off from competing. The mental rest is as important as the physical rest.
4. Winter running is not based on miles or on quickness. Instead, it is based on duration. Runners need to run at least 35 minutes non-stop each day. Some of you can do 45 or 55 minutes a day without stopping. “Without stopping” means no stretching breaks, no water breaks, no potty breaks.
5. Track starts the 2nd week of February.
6. Here is the All-Time Bronco list for the State Meet course:

DVAL Finals
@ HIdden Valley Park, Martinez
Friday, November 4, 2011
This was a very good day for Bronco cross country. We came away with an outright championship, two shared championships, two individual champions, and 15 All-League spots. There were some injuries that impacted the team picture, but Coach Anderson was able to shuffle the deck to put full teams on the line, and the resultinglineups worked just fine.

The DVAL is not strong in this division, and by virtue of having a team we were assured of no less than 2nd place. Brittany raced very well to earn a top spot and a medal. Desireé has come back well from her injury, and Marianna got a top-10 spot. Tanya was a bit off her best, and Juliana and Jonane rounded out the squad.

Adi takes 2nd!
We had sewn up the dual meet title early in the year, but today College Park was on fire on their own home course. It didn’t help that injuries had prompted varsity promotions to Cole and Jake, so perhaps it was no real surprise that we took a loss here. Still, we share the overall 2011 DVAL title.
Adi had his hands full with the varsity drop-down from College Park, and couldn’t quite haul him in. Andrew did noble battle with the Mt. Diablo boy, who is their #1 varsity runner. Dmitiry had a large PR but was eked out by a cluster of CP runners. Jared and Ryan gave spirited chase. Ben, only a few days off of a prolonged injury absence, did not have the gas for a top performance today. Zac was right behind him. Michael, Ross and James formed a nice pack. Daniel squeezed out another PR.
The slew of PR’s tell the tale. Our boys ran very hard today, and came away with a well-earned co-championship. Tthis makes three in a row for the BFS.

Kayla led the charge, and finished just outside the top 10 as our lead runner. Megan, Montana, Rachel, and Mackenzie all rolled in as a pack. Olivia and Leslie tortted in a bit back.

Ben takes the BJV title in convincing fashion.
This was an exciting race, as the three contending teams squared off for battle. We had the luxury of owning the dual meet title, but our opponents were inspired. It helped that Ben won the individual title with a great effort. Landon and Aaron both PR’d in their efforts today. Carter gave chase early, but wasn’t able to hold that edge the entire race. Chris B. went out well, but was not at top form and could not repeat his recent performances. Mike Lin and Andrew gave us PR races. Our pack cluster of Chirs C., Marcko, Kimo pulled away from our second pack of Crhis B., Travis, Steven and Mike. Peter had a huge PR.
After the dust had settled, Clayton beat College Park who beat us. This was the reverse of the dual meet order, so we all three share the overall title.

Ami and Caitlyn ran very well as usual. Ami was hurting today, and struggled but still grabbed a 1st team spot. Caitlyn took off after the top girls, and was able to take 2nd overall in a quality effort. Meredith had her best race of the season, taking off hard and holding on for a 2nd team spot. Alex and Kelsey were a tandem, and Peyton, despite some trepidations about her sore Achilles, warmed to the task to finish right behind those two.
It was a pleasure to see all of the GV receive All-DVAL honors. And on a historical note, just two years ago our top NG girl finished 16th, so we have come a long way since then.
And looking towards next year, this year’s varsity consists of 1 junior, 4 sophomores, and a freshman.

Well, we saved the best for last. We took the DVAL title outright, had the individual league champion, and we did it against inspired competition from an unexpected source. Danny won the race emphatically. MIchael gave us a solid effort, and James came up with a big race to give us three 1st Team runners. Joel had to hold off a determined Cole, and they both took 2nd team honors. Jake is still a bit gimpy with a flareup in his sore knee, and Connor could not get untracked.
College Park was the expected challenge, and they ran hard, but it was Clayton Valley who came up strong to make the biggest noise. Historically, Danny is the first NG league champion since Rolf Kvalvik in the old FAL in 1995. And our records do not go back quite that far, but it is believed that this is the first boys’ varsity title since 1989. (Even the legendary 2004 NCS D-II title team did not win the DFAL that year.)

Danny leaves no doubt in his indivdual victory.
Looking ahead:
1. North Coast Championships --
We will be competing in the NCS championships Saturday November 19 at Hayward High School. The girls race at 11:30; the boys race at 1:00 p.m.
2. The ooaches will be arranging at least one workout visit to Hayward High prior to the races, so we can get acclimated to the course.
3. The North Coast roster consists of 7 runners and 2 alternates. Your coaches should have informed you of who those top 9 athletes are that will be continuing on to this race.
4. By now you should have received word about the upcoming awards banquet, where we celebrate the season with momentoes, pictures, accolades and awards. Everyone is part of the glory and triumph of the 2011 season, so we expect to see all of you there.

Ben had a resurgent race after a prolonged recovery from injury.
Adi seems recovered from his recent illness and blasted to a strong win over a determined YV opponent. Andrew was not too far behind this duel. Ben continues to make strong progress after over a month of inactivity due to injury. Zack led a little pack inluding Ryan and Michael Anderson. Ross zipped in a bit back. Noah appeared to be a bit lethargic today. Daniel and Nathan languished in the back of the race.
The BFS, despite all of the call-ups to varsity and the various injuries and illnesses, finishes the regular season at 6-0 on top of the DVAL standings. A 3rd straight league title seems to be at hand.

Marco was a strong part of our BJV success today.
Our BJV ended the dual meet season in first place with a 6-0 record. Ben chased after his College Park nemesis, and got closer than last week to him. Landon was not far behind. Carter seperated himself from the rest of the NG pack along with Marco and Chris B. Our JV bulk group was led by Andrew this week. Peter is gaining ground on the BJV crowd with each successive race.

The girls ran an excellent race today, and showed that they are solidfying as a team. Scoring against Berean was one thing, but running so well against Clayton Valley was quite another. Ami took the individual win over (the lead CV girl Alex Tate seems to be ill) in her career best 3 mile time. Caitlyn took a strong third place. Meredith and Alex chased the main CV pack the whole race. Kelsey, called up to varsity, responded by finishing our scoring as our 5th girl. Kayla nd Rachel got varsity experience.

DVAL # 3
@ Hidden Valley, Martinez 10/19/2011
This was an “easy” meet, since we were racing against the smaller programs in our league. Concord, Mt. Diablo, and Ygnacio Valley recently have not been able to field large teams. This gave us the leeway to move athletes up to varsity to test them out at the 3 mile racing distance.
Despite the fact that our scoring was against smaller, and in some case, non-existant teams, the Broncos still ran hard. The slew of PR’s attest to the effort.

DQ Mike Valeriani n.t.
With Danny sitting out the race with a sore knee, the rest of the boys jockeyed for the lead in the race. Mike took off and was in charge for most of the race but still was not at full health after last week’s flu. James out sprinted Joel at the finish, with upstart Cole but seconds behind. Connor was not far behind, and Landon and Aaron did well for their first encounter with 3 miles. Mike was disappointed with his race and stalked out of the chute which is a DQ.
This was a good indication of our team depth, with the team regulars challenging each other seriously within the overall team framework. With the boys pushing each other like this, we can only continue to improve as we enter the championship phase of the season.

Meredith was supposed to be resting her sore knee, but instead elected to run the GFS race. She won it big time with a solid PR. Montana had the her best race of the season and an excellent PR to boot. Tanya is also showing good improvement. Catalina is gradually learning how to race. Juliana’s foot is feeling better, so her PR was huge. Joanne earned her own improvement.

Our JV troops also took a hit when we promoted some runners, but since we didn’t have to worry about the competition we could focus on getting girls healthy and into races. Dezarina led the charge today with a nice PR. Mackenzie also improved. Megan is just getting back from knee surgery and is a solid addition to our JV squad. Marian trotted in safely. Leslie is getting healthy enough to get into races now. Brittany and Desiree are recovering from hip and shin sorenesses, and were instructed to take it easy this week, and so they did.

With only the Concord girl in the race with them, our mighty Broncettes had the race literally all to themselves. Peyton tore out in front early and was in charge the whole way. Alex kept her in sight with a good race of her own. Kelsey went out strong, with Kayla in tow. Kayla won the sprint at the end. Olivia was getting her varsity race experience, and she finished our scoring with a conservative effort.

The recent balance of power has shifted, as Northgate dominates the boys divisions with College Park and Clayton close behind. College Park continues to be the power in the girls’ divisions, with Clayton Valley challenging and Northgate a bit back of that.
This sets up interesting scenarios for the DVAL championship meet, which accounts for 1/2 half of the DVAL overall championships. Clayton Valley is still a contender in the BV for 2nd place, and will be going after College Park again. College Park has consistently maintained that they will get Northgate at the championships. This will be a real dogfight of a race, with three teams seriously going after the title.
The GV race will be interesting as well, since College Park beat Clayton narrowly in the dual meet this week to take the lead in the standings. However, the lead Clayton girl (Alex Tate) was not well and only finished 4th for them. She is two-time defending DVAL champ, and when healthy will certainly improve their chances. Meanwhile, we will be trying to sneak as many of our girls as possible into the All-League spots which go to the girls who finish in the top 21 places.
The JV and FS races will also be very competitive. Again, the College Park and Clayton Valley boys are not convinced that Northgate is the best DVAL team this year. The BJV especially is seen as a wide open race between those three teams. The GJV is a narrow contest between College Park and Clayton, and Northgate seems to be a notch behind in 3rd at this point.
The BFS appears to be Northgate’s race all the way. Even with lots of shifting by various teams (including our own) we still have been the obviously superior team all season. This, of course, means that College Park will be all that more inspired to knock us off our pedestal. The GFS is considered a runaway for College Park to the point that Clayton Valley has not even bothered to enter a team all year. We have an outside chance of putting a dent into their race if all our our girls can get healthy and have the great race on that day.
Next Week:
DVAL # 4 is at Newhall Park, with Clayton Valley hosting. We will be scoring against Berean Christian.

Notes:
Well, we have now finished the first half of the DVAL season, and it has been a bit of a mixed bag.
1. We have had good results on the boys’ side, with some nice wins over our top challengers College Park and Clayton Valley.
2. The girls’ side has seen some very good marks and some excellent improvements. However, we have yet to put the whole package together for a team effort.
3. Back to the boys: behind Danny, who has become one of the better runners in the East Bay, we have been assembling a nice cluster of strong veterans and rapidly improving youngsters. Today we moved up Jake Egley from the BFS as Ian and Mike V both could not run and he came thorugh in spades as we edged Clayton.
4. Adi was moved to the JV’s to make sure we could go 1-2-3 on Clayton to win that one, and he led Landon and Aaron to just that result.
5. Cole was kept on BFS to also lead that pack, and Andrew and Dmitriy came through with excellent races to once again go 1-2-3 on the rest of the league.
6. For the girls: Peyton had been sick and Meredith is experiencing a balky knee, so our already short-handed GV was relegated to running close to Clayton. Still, we are a contender and we can get even closer.
7. Kelsey had her best race of the season in the GJV, but the recent hard workouts took the legs out of the rest of the team and Clayton took our number there too.
8. With Clayton electing not to run a GFS team, all we had to do was get 5 girls to cross the finish line to earn the win. We accomplished that goal.
9. Even with the hard workouts, the team came through with a remarkable set of PR’s. Not only did we have lots of PR’s, those PR’s were large ones.

Aside from Alex, the girls were perhaps surprised by the size and the quickness of their race. Yes, JV’s do run fast. Alex ran an excellent time (#2 onthe Northgate All-Time list for this course) and finsihed in the top 12 % of the race. The rest of the girls were back, but essentially still in the middle of the race. The best part was getting all these girls down here for the big-meet experience.

Well, well, well . . . this was a real treat. We have been getting used to seeing Danny win (or almost win) races and this one was no exception. He did get nipped right at the end, but it was an excellent race regardless. The other part of this race was the great addition of Jake and Cole that sparked us to a 3rd place team finish.
We had thought that losing Ian for hte season would drop us a bit in overall team presence, but our regulars and the new guys covered just fine. Mike had a rebound race to return to our #2 slot, the puppies came through, and our veterans Joel, James and Connor had their own little convoy not too far behind.
The medals are certainly nice.

We were not able to coax all of our varsity regulars to this meet, so the coaches’ decision was to let Ami and Caitlyn race for individual glory while the rest of the girls could contribute to a team JV effort.
This seemed to work out well as the two girls went out strongly in their usual tandem, and held on for the duration of the race to top medal spots. They both earned medals via strong PR’s.
Notes:
1. We were able to get 27 runners to the line, along with 2 sports med trainers. This is not bad but we initially had hoped for closer to 40 runners to make the trip. Next year we promote this for what it is -- a chance to be part of the the single biggest high school cross country event in the world.
2. We choose to run in the morning races for travel considerations, so we can get back to Walnut Creek earlier. What some of our runners and parents may not be aware of is that Northgate is a Dvision III school, which means we are a mid-sized school. We ran today in the Division I races, which consist of much larger school (some have over 1000 more students than we do). This makes our times and race achievements all that more remarkable, given that we were perhaps the smallest school in our races today.
3. Thanks to all of the athletes, coaches, parents and administrators that did remarkable work in planning this trip, making all the arrangements, dealing with the constant shifts in planning details, and providing the help and assistance neecded to make a trip like this the success it was. Thank you all.
And now for the record book:
The internet is an amazing place, and with a little digging many facts emerge. It turns out that Northgate has visited Mt. SAC a few times. Most notably Coach Sutherland made the trip in 2002 and 2004, and Coach Mike brought runners in 2008, and this has become a 4-year tradition so far.
This means that we have lots of times for comparisons, and we can now make top 10 lists for this course. Many of today’s runners are on those lists. Check it out.

Danny beats rival Aiden Goltra of Las Lomas for the individual win.
This invitational marks the end of our Saturday meets (except for the Mt. SAC trip), which is also the end of the early morning carpools and the all of that. We did very well indeed, even with an injury or two, and some lineup shifting. Still, we placed in medal position in three of the 6 races we entered, and had two individual race winners. A good day for Broncos all around.

Saturday, October 9, 2011
On a beautiful day for running, the Northgate Broncos did very well. The temperature was mild, the sky was clear, the ground was soft (perhaps a bit soggy in spots), and the competition was good. Our brave bunch came away with a team win, two individual wins, three team award placings, 13 individual medals, and 31 PR’s. Not a bad day at all.

This was anticipated as one of our featured races, as the young girls got a break from varsity duty and got a chance to run at the FS level. It played out as planned. Caitlyn ran stride-for-stride with the Logan girl for the first mile and then put her away in the canyon portion of the course. Meredith flirted with 2nd until the very end to put us the driver’s seat for the team win. Alex popped in soon after, and Brittany outsprinted Kelsey (who had breathing problems) at the end. Desiree’s shins prevented her from finishing the race.
The win was very nice and the medals are pretty.

We moved Jared up from the B Frosh to make a complete team, and he took his promotion to heart with an inspired run to lead the team. Dmitriy ran well to finish in the to half of the race. Ryan once again was impressive with his tenacity. Ross improved strongly yet again. James, albeit still tentative, had his own big improvement.
The overall team placement is not reflective of the boys'’ efforts, especially since we broke up the regular BFS crowd into three separate races.

We had a number of injuries, illnesses, and family obligations that nibbled away at our overall numbers, so we spread our girls into the JV and GFS races only. The GFS did well, and the JV regulars also ran well. Rachel came on very strong in the last mile for a top spot. Kayla, even with her back continuing to tighten up, earned another medal for us. Dezarina scurried to a huge PR and her own medal, and Montana put on strong showing to earn the last individual medal. Olivia rounded out our scoring to cement the 3rd place finish.
Mackenzie and Tanya were a nice tandem not too far behind. Catalina was delayed by helping the injured Logan girl, and came in hand-in-hand with the girl from SF International in a show of friendly competition. Joanne outsprinted three girls at the finish.
Even though the girls finished third, by rule a JV team cannot earn awards if the school did not field a varsity team. Since we did not have a GV team, the team award went to the next eligible team. However, since Coach Brewer is the meet manager, he has access to the box of medals and the girls will not go empty-handed.

We were poised to do some damage in this race, with the top FS boys joining our JV regulars. However, injuries, twinges, and religious obligations forced us to move Landon and Aaron to varsity. It turned out that with Yreka and DeLaSalle having strong performances, we would have finished 3rd even with them aboard.
The race was apparently a dual meet between Yreka and DeLaSalle until the last mile, and Cole, Jake, and Adi moved up through the pack to all finish in the top 10. Andrew faded but held on to be our 4th, and Mike Lin rounded out the scoring with a finish in the top third of the race. Travis, Carter, Kimo, Chris B., Chris C., and Marco formed the now-familiar Bronco swarm not too far behind Mike L. Mike B. was close after them, and Mike C. rounded out our team finish.

Well, having Danny win in his impressive fashion was a huge treat all by itself. Whew! He certainly has found a new level of competition. And he did it by outmuscling his arch-nemesis Aidan Goltra of Las Lomas in the last 100 yards.
Mike V. ran smoothly today to earn his own medal. James ran competently in the upper third of the race. Landon and Aaron, substituting for Ian, Joel and Connor, ran strongly despite their emergency game-day promotions to the three mile competition.
The 8th place finish (we lost out on 7th on the tie-breaker) was pretty good in a field of 24 teams., all things considered.
Notes:
1. We were able to get 47 runner s to the starting line. Six injured reserve came along to cheer. There were 11 others that had an array of injuries, illness, family obligations or religious observances to pull them away. So we had 53 Broncos in attendance, which still continues to be a large improvement over last year. Broncos remain strong to the end.
2. This is our last carpooling invitational. There are many thanks to hand out for the last 5 weekends of travel, snacks, early mornings, long rides, and all the other things that we have gone through.
• all the parent drivers -- this has been the backbone of our ability to travel. Without you all donating your time and vehicles and gas we would not have been able to do a fraction of what we’ve accomplished so far.
• the snack table, which is now taken for granted, still remains a point of envy from other teams. We are privileged to have this continuous smorgasbord of excellence on a weekly basis.
• the remarkable presence of our Sports Med team, which takes full care of all our aches and pains, big and small.
• the Artichoke Beach party -- organized by Nancy Frazier, so many others of you took the time to make it the delightful excursion it turned out to be.
• the pasta feeds, which require a house, lots of food, and a willingness to put up with children for an extended period of time.
3. But there is still plenty of season left. We have three more DVAL meets, the Mt. SAC trip, the DVAL Championships, the NCS Championships. possibly the State Championships, and then the Nike Nationals in Portland.
And Just How Do You Stack Up?

Workouts Work!
Aside from all the individual and team medals, the most impressive part of this meet was all of the large PR’s. Many of our rookie runners ran this course five and a half weeks ago, and some of our veterans have been on this course four or five times. Almost everyone PR’d, and some by huge margins.
This is not accomplished by accident, nor by chance. This is a direct result of workouts, and hard workouts. Improvement does not come quickly, nor does it come easily, but when it does it has value.
The large PR’s are often typical of younger runners, but many of our veterans also posted improvements of a minute or more.
Congratulations to those who notched a PR of any size, and also to those of you tried and came close.
Mt. SAC Invite
Coming Soon ! !
We need to nail down the exact count for Mt. SAC this week. All of you should have a) gotten the e-mail attachments and/or b) gotten the handout from Coach Brewer. What remains is the following:
• Choose to go
• Confirm with Coach Brewer
• get your parents to sign the permission form
• give Coach Brewer the check for $150.00.
If you choose to go, Coach Brewer will be asking for verbal confirmations early this week. If money is an obstacle, let Coach Brewer know. There are scholarships available.
We would like as many Broncos as possible to go. This is not a meet just for “elite” runners, but for all the runners to get the experience early in their career. All runners, regardless of ability or performance level, are encouraged to make this trip if at all possible.
Yes, it involves missing a day of class, but hopefully there is ample lead time to work with teachers on softening that impact.
Pizza Night Fundraiser at Mary’s Pizza Shack
We would like all the Bronco families to try to join us in this event. Hopefully this can become an ongoing tradition. The 20% kickback is generous indeed, and we can always use financial support.
The flyer is attached for you convenience, and we will see as many of you as can possibly make it on Monday!

Editorial -- End Of Season Push
This is time of the season where we start thinking about the end of the road. We are only a month away from the DVAL Championships, and that is the end of the road for all but the 10 boys and 10 girls that continue to train for the NCS Championships.
Intensity Continues
The mindset we need to have here is intensity. We are going to gradually shift the workouts to shorter, but quicker distances. Yes, we will still have a long run each week, but we will also be changing our focus from pure conditioning to training for the hard fast races that are coming our way.
Adjust to faster workouts
This means that your bodies will be adjusting to different types of workouts, and there will be twinges and aches as your muscles make these adjustments. Be prepared, which means take care to do warmups thoroughly, and to not cut out on cooldowns.
This also means we need to be smart about the change in the weather, and start to wear warm clothing to workouts. The evening chill comes quickly now, and muscles will cramp and ached. Also, wearing sweats traps the heat and allows the muscles to warmup more completely at the start of a workout.
Adjust to higher expectations
This also means you need to prepare yourself mentally. Your race times will get faster. You will start (or continue) to feel stronger at the end of races. And finally it means that you have to be ready to push yourself harder in races in order to unleash all of this conditioning and turn it into fast times and high placings.
Your body is going to be ready at the end of the season. Your mind has to be ready too.
Jake, Adi, and Cole end up going 1-2-3 on the field.
It rained quite a bit this week, and the meet started under a steady drizzle. By the time the coaches had figured out the rain-detour course, the clouds cleared and we had sun and blue sky. And a few puddles.
After it was all said and done, we had ruan very well against College Park. They beat us in the girls (being down two varsity athletes didn't help, and that thinned out the JV as well), but we gave them chase in a determined effort. And the boys won all three divisions, and the BV win was especially sweet since it marked the first time in nearly 20 years that Northgate had beaten College Park.

Danny takes the lead for good at the halfway point.
We had a great week of workouts and races and activities. We had the caution tape run, campus cleanup day, team pictures, a pasta feed, a race, and of course, the beach party.
The races themselves were quite thrill. Read on - - -
Artichoke Invitational
Half Moon Bay High School
Saturday, October 1
For a fall day in Half Moon Bay, it couldn’t have been nicer weather. After morning mist, the sun came out. The breeze was gentle, and temperature was mild. And after all the races, we found that the beach was calm and warm and we even had dolphins cavorting in the surf.
And as far as the races were concerned, that was pretty good too. The feature moment was watching Danny win the varsity race. We took home 13 medals, and placed high in most of our races.

We decided to combine the freshmen into the frosh-soph race, and it seemed to work. Jake followed coaches’ directives and went out a bit more strongly and was our top boy today. Adi ran a good race as well, and he too earned a medal. Cole is starting to show the effects of his injury layoff and did have the desired spark at the end of the race. Andrew tried to win it all in the first 1/2 miles, but hung on to get a top place for us. Dmitriy surged at the tend to almost nip Andrew. Jared got caught up in the large race and couldn’t work his way up as is his wont.
Noah continues to explore his new aggressive racing tactic, and it is working. Zach is impressive at the end of races. Ryan is a steady runner, and gave us his usual consistent effort. Ross is becoming more confident with each race. Joaquin improved over last year. Michael is still learning this race business. Nathan survived his first race of the season. Matt missed workouts due to a kink in his neck, and is still stiff and sore. Daniel is gradually getting more assertive.
We finished 4th overall as a team in this race, which is a very good indication that this young team is definitely going to be a force to contend with in DVAL races.

We almost won this race, and had to settle for a close 2nd to St. Francis. With 20% of the total runners in the race belonging to us, we were a power even before the race started.
Kelsey was determined today, and went to the front early and hung on the whole race. Brittany was a bit back but had a nice finish surge. Rachel just go there in time from the SAT, and was here usual strong competitor. Kayla kept up a strong pace throughout. Desiree was working on extending her stride, and that seemed to work today. Montana looked much more confident in her race today. Olivia improved over last year. Marianna is still trying to break out of her safe zone, and had a bit of finish sprint today. Mackenzie kept Olivia and Marianna in sight.
Tanya had to deal with two sore ankles, and still did well. Catalina gave us another steady race. Juliana gingerly stepped through the race to test how well her foot has healed. Jessica finished the race as she had promised, despite her balky knee still acting up. Joanne closed well on Jessica at the end.

We had a muted presence as the SAT took a lot of senior boys. Some of them tried to scurry in for their race, but just missed it due to traffic.
Aaron ran a smarter race than last week, and was able to move past Landon on the last stretch before the track. They both earned medals. Chris is quietly becoming a strong part of this group. Travis eked out a diminutive PR. Michael loved the hill. Kimo cruised in. Steven is finding his stride now that his knees have healed. Peter once again gave it his all.
As we head into the DVAL competition. we can see that this group will be a force. Hopefully we can take the measure of College Park this year.

Caitlyn races to a top finish.
We were looking good in the team picture when Ami stepped in a hole and popped her ankle. She had to drop out of the race, which made us incomplete. We probably would have finished 3rd with her in there.
Caitlyn raced on to finish an excellent 3rd. Meredith also ran to a top place. Peyton gave chase, but couldn’t maintain pace after a strong start. Alex continues to give us steady races. Ami was able to recover enough to soak her ankle in the surf for about 45 minutes at the beach party.
After all the comparisons, the meet management place all the runners from all the races together by team, and by that comparison our GV is 10th out of the 46 teams that ran. Not bad.

Danny took the lead early, was challenged by the Half Moon Bay boy, and outpowered him on the hill for the individual win. Mike as very consistent a bit back, fighting with the Carlmont boys. Ian took the whole race to creep up on Michael. James is still a bit reserved in these varsity races. Connor closed well to be right on James.
All of the boys PR’d, which is what is expected of varsity runners. The high team placing is very nice. We lost ot only Carlmont and Cupertino, and both those squads are ranked in the top 5 in the CCS. And with all the combined times from the whole meet, we placed 5th overall out of 50 total teams. Again, not bad at all.
Cleanup Day Work Party Worked Out
Just last year there was a bit of hesitancy to have us do our Cleanup Day volunteering a day early. This year, the committee scheduled extra work for us to do to take advantage of our early labor.
So, after our team pictures, we picked up litter, spread out mulch, and dug up gravel so the new plants could have a chance to grow. At some point our little work party resembled a chain gang.
Kelsey strides out at the mile mark.
Ram Invitational
Westmoor High School, Daly City

*
It was a arch-typical Daly City morning, withthe fog and the chill and the breeze. It was hard to even find the place, with the traffic lights obscured by fog. And sitting around in the middle of a drizzling cloud was not exactly most people’s idea of the perfect Saturday morning excursion.
Regardless of which, the Broncos arrived ready to do battle. We were able to get 49 runners to the starting line. 3 other injured reserve showed up for support. This is the first met of the year where we put fewer than 50 runners in races. (We would still like to see more of the team make the meets.)
We were able to come away with 16 individual medals. Broncos picked up at least two medals in each race (and 4 in the GV !). And we finished 3rd in the BFS, the GV and the BV.
Just on a gender comparison note: The girls picked up 8 medals, and the boys picked up 8 medals. How’s that for balance?
There are several PR’s, but they are from 2 years ago. Last year this school underwent renovation and the course was significanly altered so the times don’t hld up.
Apologies for not having complete results. There was a bit of miscommunication and the stat crew (including coaches) didn’t pick up on all the necessarydata before leaving. It will be a few days before the full results are available on-line, so we’ll have to live with what we have for a while.

In our first race of the day, the young girls set the tone for the rest of the team by having some very aggressive performances. Kelsey immediate showed some fiesty determination and ran very tough to 5th place. Brittany also scampered along sprightly and grabbed her own medal. Desiree found the soft grass to her liking (with her sore shins) and was able to stride out well. Dezarina was right behind her. Tanya suffered mind-race, ground out the finish, and was limping badly at the end. Tough girl. Catalina put it in her mind to finish, and that she did. Joanne was uneven in her pace, but had a finish sprint.
The score was close, and we were only 20 points out of 3rd place.

We didn’t have a full 5 freshmen today to make a full team, so we combined them withthe sophomores to join forces in hopes of a better team showing. It seemed to work, as we tied for 2nd and lost on the tie-breaker (better 6th man).
Cole continues his impressive return to racing after a month of injury layoff. He unwisely tried to sprint the whole two laps on the track, and faded, but made it back to the top of the race in time. Jake took the other tactic, and went out too slowly but had enough race distance to move up. Andrew had the best race of his young career, with an aggressive start and some real toughness in the middle of the race. Well-deserved medals here.
Dmitriy found himself challenged by the upstart Noah throughout the race, and pulled away at the end for that little intrasquad win. Jred was not far behind at all. Ryan continues to show his improvement from the track season. Joaquin led the rest of our pack. Ross was ablet o maintain a consistent pace. James was perhaps a bit too conservative today. Daniel loped in later.

The JV girls took a different tactic, and ran out conservatively and waited for the hills in order to make up ground. This worked well for us, since hills are our friends. The course was oblinging too, since the two major hills were in the first half of the race.. Rachel moved up well, and Kayla is on a major resurgence. Nice medals. Olivia led the rest of our little pack until the last little bit where Mackenzie surged past her. Marianna was called up from the GFS to fill in to make a full team, and trotted in well.

The coaches are to blame for the missing scores, as we were busy getting the overall team scores we didn’t notice that we had skipped the BJV until the meet management had packed up all the results.
Aaron got a little too excited, and tried to win the race on the track. He suffered the rest of the race, but still mamaged to recover and be competitive the rest of the way. Ben moved up well and got into the top 10. Landon continues to improve each week, and grabbed his own medal here.
MIke Lin and Carter (Carter?) were not far behind Aaron to give us a nice Bronco cluster. Chris B. was a bit faster than Chris C. today, and behind him came a Northgate onslaught of Leo, Andrew, Travis, Marco and MIke B. all in a bunch. Steven was not far behind, and Peter once again gave it his all.
Coaching estimates are that this squad finished in the top 5.

Peyton has that “take no prisoners” look as she heads into the finish sprint.
This was one of our feature races, as we have had major improvements in the varsity ranks this year and we wanted to see how they girls would do in a longer race (2.4 miles compared to the 2.0 we had been running). Well, we did just fine.
Ami and Caitlyn have become quite the tandem, and they established themselves well early on and held it for the entire race. Meredith put herself closer to the front than before. Peyton was strong too, and Alex closed the scoring for us and was in the top 1/3 of the race.
The 1-5 time gap still remains at about 90 seconds, which is good. What would be better is if that gap were 60 seconds. To be honest, at the Ed Sias Invite, or gap between our #2 and #3 was 90 seconds right there. We have improved remarkably since then, but now we have a new time goal.
The top finish in a large field is good, and University and St. Ignatius are proven programs.
And we got 4 medals out of this race -- very cool.

Joel and Ian work their way towards teh front of the race early on.
This was quite the impressive race, as it looked like Danny was going to win it all in the first mile. However, there are lots of good runners out there. The University boy looked like he was about to win it all when he mis-read the finish cones and the Wilcox runner snatched the win. Danny was 3rd, but only by 3 seconds.
Mike is a steady customer, and glided to a top finish. Joel and Ian started a ways back, but were charging through the pack well. Ian surged up to medal position, and Joel held steady a bit back. James is learning to overcome his tentativeness at the start, and was reeling people in the secondhalf of the race and nearly caught Joel. Connor was stronger at the end as well. Adi finally figured out that he had a lot left, and nearly beat Connor at the finish.
Notes:
1. Well, workouts work. We had our hardest set of workouts of the season, and the kids aborbed those and still came out strong at the races.
2. Hills are our friends. The Broncos used the hill dramatically to improve race positions and move up through the pack. Perhaps most impressive was watching Rachel go from about 20th to 8th on the 2nd hill on the grass. None of our runners were intimidated by any of these slopes.
3. Yes, working hard in hot weather pays off. As chilly and foggy and damp as it was during the races, perhaps no team appreciated that more than the Broncos who had been sweltering in 90+ degree workouts (98 on Wednesday) all week. Our cool weather performance is all the more faster since we have conditioned our bodies to operate in adverse conditions of temperature, and we can throw off heat better for it.
4. Our team presence at invitationals continues to be strong. Even with injuries, illnesses, and a smattering of family concerns, the Broncos do show up in force at invitationals.
5. We have our Beach Party coming up this weekend at the ever-popular Artichoke Invitational. This is continues to be a high spot on the Bronco running calendar, and we planning is in full swing for this one.

We have been assigned to blanket the Crossings neighborhood with flyers for the benefit 5K. This is a good thing, and goes a long way towards being a helpful part of the solution to the District’s sports financing woes.
Our captains have determined that Thursday after school is a good time to do this. Contact team captains Leslie and Olivia for the details.
Busy Week: Thursday
Water Workouts -- Splish Splash
Our pool workouts continue, and with the current warm trend are a welcome relief from the norm. Coach Mike has been cooking up some new ideas for relays, so stay tuned for that. We are also going to be continuing the breath-holding contest.
Busy Week: Friday
Team Pictures
We have team pictures scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m. The team captains will decide the team attire. The payment envelopes have been handed out, and Coach Brewer has extras.
Busy Week: Friday
Clean Up Day
Our day of cleanup is Friday, after the pictures. We will be busy from about 4:30 to about 6:00. There is no football game to avoid, so we are going to swab the track down as our job. Plus, a little litter abatement and weedicide is on the agenda as well.
Essentially this means we are going to put on the nice latex gloves and pick up every piece of litter in the stadium. Then we are going to rake weeds off of the hillsides in the interests of neatness and grass fire reduction. Finally, we are going to hose down the track and sweep the sludge to the drains.
Busy Week: Saturday
ARTICHOKE ! ! !
The long-awaited social event is now here. Check out all the necessary information listed.
Here are the race assignments and race times. Find out where you are. Direct your questions to Coach Brewer.
We are combined the B Frosh into the BFS race again this week. We are also combining the GFS and GJV races to maximize our impact.
SAT test takers let Brewer know you are testing. Take the test, then hot foot it over to Half Moon Bay and make your race.

Notes:
1. Being in the late races is an advantage, since we get to sleep in a bit. However, the traffic is really bad along the one road into Half Moon Bay, so we need to leave a little early to get there without missing the first races. Our gathering time is 8:30; we’ll leave at 9:00. This will give us the 2 hour window in case the crossing guard on the road only lets one car through at a time like previous years, or there is a car accident like last year.
2. The race assignments are tentative, and subject to revision on race day. This means you can’t rely on exactly when you might be racing, and need to be on call for a different race.
3. The beach party is always a big part of the season. Nancy Frazier has worked to handle the logistics of making the food assignments, arranging for barbecues, getting the beverages lined up, et cetera.
4. Be sure to warm dry clothes for after you get out of the surf. Cold is cold, and wet cold is very cold indeed.
5. If you somehow are trapped in another morning obligation, you can still scurry to Half Moon Bay HS later. You’ll still be able to make the JV race at the very least. and definitely the party.
6. Based on last week’s Ram Invitational, this meet should go quicker because it is divided into large and small school divisions. Also, the Artichoke meet management uses an efficient computer system and the races run right on time and therefore are scheduled closer together.
7. Even though this is considered a bigger meet than most, they are still very skimpy on awards. Run hard.
8. We’ll be heading down to the beach starting after the varsity races, so the barbecues are going and the place is set up. We’ll need a few vehicles to hold back to get the JV’s to the beach after their races.
9. Last year the schedule changed slightly, so be alert to unexpected time changes again this year.
Directions:
To the meet -- Head across the San Mateo Bridge and follow the signs to stay on Hwy 92 to Half Moon Bay. Traffic will thicken up because of the Pumpkin Festival crowd, so we do have to leave early. Turn right on Main St, then right again at Lewis Foster Drive. Half Moon Bay HS is at the end of the road. We will set up camp on the lawn across from the press booth.
To the beach -- head out to Hwy 1 and go north. Just a mile or two along Roosevelt Beach will show up on the left. Turn in and follow the road to the parking lot. The footpaths will take you to the beach proper.
Mt. SAC Coming Up
We only have three weeks before we embark on this annual epic journey to the heart of the Southland to do noble battle against the hordes. This convocation of Bronco runners will once again fly into the teeth of the best the South has to offer, and prevail or not, we will endeavor to the utmost always.
Bloated rhetoric aside, this is the annual pilgrimage to the biggest and best high school invitational in the country. Historically we have done well here against bigger schools, and we look to do it again this year.
The logistics for the trip take time to arrange, which is why we need to get our commitments in early. What we need early on is a “nose count” of the kids who are going to make the trip. This allows us to figure out the rooming arrangements and restaurant options. This meet is open to all who want to go, and has a minimal cost of $150 per runner cover the entry fees, the charter bus, the luxury suites, the team dinner, and the team lunch the next day.
Need confirmations
So, we need confirmations early on who can make this trip so we can make clearer final logistical arrangements. Coach Brewer will be gathering those commitments soon. We have chartered a bus with 54 seats, so there is plenty of room. And if we need more room, we’ll solicit a family to drive alongside the bus with the overflow athletes.
Promo attached
The essential information and the permission forms are attached separately. It is a simple disclaimer for the parents. For the athletes, it is the field trip pass to gather teacher signatures.
Brewer sez:
Editorial: Toughness
These are the rough days of the season. The workouts are scheduled to become even more aggressive, and the fatigue and soreness seem to linger a bit longer than the did before. Even the “fun” days, such as today’s caution tape run, was still a 45-60 minute continuous run through the hills.
The rough part is that this is no secret. Runners know that the workouts are going to be hard. And soon they will be harder. Getting to the track before the workout even starts is often an exercise in determination.
And this is the real definition of toughness -- not so much enduring the physical discomfort of a difficult workout, but being willing to do the workout in the first place. And by continuing to show up to do these workouts is a display of quiet fortitude that is the sign of true toughness.
Respect = Fear
This formula may sound confrontational, and perhaps even contradictory, but it is nevertheless true. Those things that we are afraid of for ourselves are precisely the things that force us to admire those who can do them. Distance running and racing are just such an activity.
Perhaps as a runner you have heard from athletes of other sports denigrating remarks about cross country and running in general. Perhaps you have heard other athletes talk about how difficult their own activity is compared to “just running.” And perhaps you have had to endure remarks along the idea that there is no point in “just running.”
These are all comments based on fear by people who are afraid of running because they do not have the toughness you do to willing put yourself through the pain of self-inflicted discomfort. No matter how rough and physical a football player may be, he is not as tough as a single runner if he is afraid to do it himself.
So when you hear these types of remarks, or people try to make running seem pointless or insignificant, just take it as a sign of respect of your toughness from people who are too afraid to do it themselves.
And next week:
College Park: Is This The Season To Pass The Mantle?
We start the DVAL season next Wednesday, and it will be a doozy. College Park, the local leviathan of running excellent, is our first opponent and we are poised to be able to beat them for the first time in 18 years in the boys’ varsity.
If this is to come to pass, it will mark a watershed moment in Bronco distance running. And if the girls’ varsity can put a scare into the College Park girls, we are then doubly blessed as a squad this year.
But let’s get by this week first.

WEEK 6!
We are now finishing up Week 6 of the season, and it has certainly come upon us quickly. The weather has gotten very warm (90 degrees plus all week) and the workout schedule called for some intense sessions. We are a weary group right now.
Saturday, September 24 -- Ram Invitational
We are off to the Ram Invitational at Westmoor High School in Daly City, which features teams from San Francisco and down the Peninsula. There will be some excellent competition to test our Bronco mettle against.
Friday, September 30 -- Picture Day and Cleanup Day
A double treat awaits us as we get to pose prettily for the photo, and then scrub the track down as our part of Cleanup Day.
Saturday, October 1 -- Artichoke Invitational and Beach Party
Some of us have been salivating all year for this weekend of running and beach frolicking. The planning is in full swing, and the team is ready.
